Open
Networked Learning (ONL) is a unique, interorganizational online course that
has engaged higher education educators worldwide for over a decade. Rooted in
problem-based learning and open education, ONL provides a collaborative,
international community of practice where staff develop digital competencies,
experiment with online pedagogy, and reflect on their teaching practices.
Evidence shows significant competence gains across the European DigCompEdu
framework, demonstrating its transformative impact on participants. Challenges
include sustaining institutional commitment and managing the diversity of
global participants, but these are addressed through community-driven
facilitation, layered openness, and scalable course design. Key lessons
highlight ONL’s dual role as both course and community, its capacity to empower
educators as innovators, and its proven sustainability across 17 iterations. By
fostering global collaboration, ONL offers a scalable, transferable model of
impactful staff development highly relevant to institutions seeking educational
transformation.
